A Nightlife Revolution Hits NYC Every so often, a new concept comes along that could potentially alter the way we look at entertainment. These concepts more often than not fail, due to a lack of the necessary hype that attracts people and keeps them coming back for more. Bar Code, midtown Manhattan’s latest offering to both locals and tourists, offers a concept that hopes to attract the child in all of us. Although not a new concept on the East Coast, or even New York State, for that matter, Bar Code brings a fresh twist to the Manhattan nightlife scene. This twist is accomplished by placing a full-service lounge in the middle of a high-tech gaming arcade. The style with which Bar Code presents this marriage of two popular entertainment concepts is second to none. Bar Code makes up a portion of a new, multi-level entertainment complex located in the heart of Times Square. Patrons enter the facility from a street level entranceway that leads to an eye-catching escalator hallway. After riding the escalator to the second level, one is presented with 2 options: proceeding up another level to Galactic Circus, an all access area, or entering the adults only Bar Code. The door policy at Bar Code is age 18 and over during off-peak hours and 21 and over during peak hours. This allows for a comfortable and mature atmosphere at all times. In the early evenings it is not surprising to find a mix of after-work businessmen, tourists, and “Bridge and Tunnelers” grabbing a pre-theater drink. This mix makes for a fun environment that allows for easy and fun interactions with others. It seems as though weekend nights seem to be the hottest thus far, since the establishment’s recent grand opening. Upon one’s first visit, it is difficult not to be overwhelmed by the amazing décor, designed by the facility’s own design team. The extensive use of stainless steel and rich colors provides an ultra-modern look throughout the entire first and second levels. The lighting and sound system can easily match if not outdo the systems of many of Manhattan’s nightclubs. No expense was spared in the creation of a cold, yet strangely inviting atmosphere throughout the building. At night, the house lights are dimmed, giving Bar Code more of a high-tech lounge atmosphere. Blue-neon-rimmed, stainless steel pool tables radiate and act as a centerpiece to the entire room. The rest of the lighting is provided by the many video games, televisions, and projections that are strategically placed throughout the bar. Live DJs provide music during the evening hours, replacing the music videos and varying musical selections that play during the day. The bar at Bar Code is very well stocked with an assortment of top-shelf liquors, imported and micro brewed beers. The bar also features a variety of specialty drinks such as unique martinis and the like along with “Boost” drinks, which are enhanced with various herbal stimulants. Drink prices at Bar Code are relatively inexpensive as far as Manhattan is concerned. Patrons can also order food from a menu that features a ton of snacks and appetizers along with burgers, wraps, and pizzas. Food prices are very reasonably priced (especially for Times Square). Bar Code also features some of the latest games that companies have to offer. Everything from video games, to air hockey, to virtual reality simulators is featured. People of all ages can enjoy themselves for hours as they try out all Bar Code has to offer. Video game prices are a bit high, but are comparable to those found in other Times Square gaming establishments. I am pleased to say that Bar Code covered all bases when setting out to due its part to revolutionize the nightlife experience in New York City. Along with all that I have already mentioned, I found Bar Code to be well staffed with very courteous and polite employees. Bar Code is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. A policy that I think is ambitious, but possibly difficult to maintain. This 24-hour policy does, however, make Bar Code a great stop when those after-club munchies set in. I can assure those seeking a little variety and an escape from the same old scene, Bar Code, with all it has to offer, is almost certain to fulfill at least some of your needs.
