Checking Into Bungalow 8 It looks just splendid inside. Large potted palm trees, colorful wall murals and fun, oversized furniture create the ideal situation for a night of feel-good laughs with friends. Occupying a small, yet whimsical space, the décor mingles a 1920's Cuban nightlife theme with a late 70's scruffy Miami motel pool-side motif. Large photographs adorning the walls, featuring tree scenes, pink cabanas and swimming pool images successfully inspire a sense of outdoor enjoyment, as if the loungers are amidst the tropical air. And though there is really no designated outside area to hang out at the Bungalow, most will spend plenty of time enjoying the scenery on the lightless street out front, while helplessly wishing themselves a way in. A super-strict door policy and "members only" routine are explained at the entrance in very concise terms, intimidating most to a perhaps, less discerning locale on an adjacent street. Most ironically, a No Vacancy neon sign hangs in the front window, which if looked in more closely would reveal a virtually empty lounge. The atmosphere is sort of dusty and dim with most of the patrons scattered around the bar, like moths gathering to the light. The glassed-in 70's style VIP lounge upstairs houses a less than impressive DJ spinning repetitious, commercial house and hip-hop. There is a great view of the beautiful pointed glass ceiling from up here and a birds-eye-view of the of trendily-clad meanderers down below, sipping their $16.00 glasses of champagne circulating the see and be scene system. Low-rise tables sit alone within the confines of large black and white polka dot and striped jumbo booths wearing Reserved tags that never seem to quite live up to their anticipated occupancy. At the same time, the line outside has managed to grow and diminish many times without allowing a one to fill the very Vacant space inside.
Bungalow 8 is just about the perfect venue to host a party, however, it seems the hosts have little interest in creating the party vibe. I guess the Idea is to invite all your hip friends and call for a BYODJ.
