The Lowdown on Lotus

You strap on those fancy Manolos, or that sleek D&G top in preparation for a glamorous star-studded evening at Lotus, that swanky supper-club way west, by the river. Don't go overboard, however, for the fading of this fantasy begins when you first hop out of your yellow taxi onto the broken cobblestone streets of foul-aired MEPA (meat-packing district).

Notice the collection of 20 and 30 somethings just sort of milling around the velvet rope each wearing their finest duds as they shamelessly drop any name or any line that might somehow land them on the other side. Some say one might have an easier time getting into Fort Knox.

Perhaps you said the appropriate prayer, put your name on the "right" guest list, or most prolifically called in advance for a dinner reservation your entrance is made through a whirlwind of angry faces and grunts that taint your way all the way to the ticket booth. Here you hand over your 20 as they direct you downstairs to an empty, dark, dungeon-like basement. It is now that you realize the interesting part about a place that's impossible to get into. When you finally do cross that line, you're just about all alone.

With the help of your handy key-chain flashlight, you make your way up a dark flight of stairs to candle-lit balcony lounge. Lit only by a few candles and the lamps from the main dining room it overlooks, the murky room features several squared off sitting areas with dusty-colored cushions on which patrons sit and enjoy light conversation. The décor is all about wood and neutral wheats, honeys, beiges and chocolates with hints of dusty jeweled hues for embellishment.

With little room to sit, you take a walk toward the balcony and sip your $10.00 drink overlooking the grand dining room. Constructed with very high ceilings in similar warm creamy tones, the bi-level luminous room reveals the last of the night's reservations, wrapping up doggy bags preparing for the real festivities to begin. And then it happens. The music's volume steps up 10 notches and the Hip Hop and Pop begin to bump. The diners get up from their seats and the party activates.

So you travel down the stairs to the dining room entrance into a mass of dancers situated between the bar and the booths. The undistinguished crowd of late 20's and 30's move about, all eating up the only light in, all of the three-story club. This is the part where your friend turns to you after scouring high and low for some eye-candy and asks, "This is it?" LOTUS 409 West 14TH STREET NEW YORK, NY
